Visit your local Sealy retail store and remember the tips in this guide to help you make the right choice. Before you know it, you'll have mastered mattress speak and can enjoy testing out Sealy beds in-store feeling well informed.
Here are our top tips for getting the most out of your trip in-store:
If you’re shopping for you and a partner, we encourage you to shop together for your new bed. Comfort test a number of mattresses to find the sleep system that matches each of your comfort needs.
Comfort ranges from very soft to ultra firm - so establish your comfort preference first. Remember: Comfort is different for everyone. Try several different comforts when you’re in the store. A good mattress should provide you with the right support at every comfort level.
Things to do (and what not to do) when setting up your new Sealy, including how to safely carry your new mattress and keep your mattress clean to ensure your Sealy mattress has a long life.
Always carry your mattress on its side. You should never attempt to carry the mattress by yourself. | Handles (where fitted) are only for positioning the mattress and not for lifting or carrying. |
Do not fold your mattress under any circumstances. It will damage the edge support wire. If necessary, gently flex the mattress when going through doorways. | Do not remove the law tag located at the end of your mattress. It contains care and content details vital to your Guarantee/ Warranty. |
Don't allow anyone to jump on your mattress - abuse is not covered by Sealy's Guarantee/ Warranty. | Dispose plastic packaging immediately (these bags are polyethylene and are recyclable). |
Keep plastic packaging away from children. They have no air vents and could cause suffocation. | Keep your mattress clean - a mattress protector is advisable. |
Keep your mattress dry. You should protect it from water and other fluids. A waterproof sheet or fitted waterproof cover under the mattress protector may be useful for children's beds. | Dry cleaning chemicals can damage some of the construction materials. Refer to the care instructions on the law-tag which is sewn into the border of your mattress and base. |
Important: It is the purchaser's responsibility to tighten the legs and castors to ensure that the bed is set up as intended. The Guarantee/ Warranty is voided if this is not performed as recommended.
To reduce tossing and turning, you need good blood circulation throughout your body through the night. A bed which contours to the form of your body, and the position you sleep will assist in achieving this.
People who sleep on their side apply greater pressure to a concentrated point in the hips and the shoulders, therefore some side sleepers prefer a softer or plusher sleep surface to ensure maximum comfort.
Front and back sleepers apply pressure over a wider surface area and have less pressure points, so sometimes feel they don’t need the plushest or softest bed to relieve their pressure points and prefer a medium or hard feel bed.
When you choose a Sealy Posturepedic you can be sure it has been designed for correct support and long lasting comfort. The comfort choice of your new mattress is a very personal decision that only you can make. Whether it’s ultra plush (very soft), plush (quite soft) or firm, the Sealy Posturepedic range will have a bed that suits your preference. It’s as easy as 1 – 2 to find the comfort that’s right for you:
Any comfort system is designed to contour to the shape of your body, to enable good blood circulation throughout your body, and choosing a comfort level really depends on the position in which you sleep and how your body applies pressure on the mattress.
The biggest mistake when customers buy a mattress is selecting the wrong comfort choice. A plush Sealy Posturepedic bed will give you the same level of support as a medium and firm, however there is a significant difference in sleeping on a Firm to a Plush bed in the feel.
Here is a general description of the Sealy comfort choices, however we do strongly recommend that you observe your sleeping position and try the mattress in store before you buy it.
Plush – The softest and most luxurious feel in the range, provides the highest level of conformance to relieve pressure points, whilst still delivering equal support to a firm.
Cushion Firm – The best of both worlds, a Medium feel delivers great conformance and support to ensure your body is able to get the rest and recovery it needs at night.
Firm – Perfect for those that like the feel of a rigid sleeping surface, supporting you throughout the night.
Sealy Posturepedic is synonymous with orthopaedically correct support, a pressure-relieving comfort system and long-lasting durability.
The word ‘Posturepedic’ is a contraction of the words ‘Posture’ and ‘Orthopaedic’:
Posture = The position of the human anatomy as a whole.
Pedic = The medically correct position of skeletal and associated structures of the body.
Sealy Posturepedic is the culmination of continuous research and ongoing development of sleep systems, and their interaction with the human body.
Here is how it works:
What makes a good bed? Ten years ago, the Orthopaedic Advisory Board (OAB) attempted to answer this question. They concluded that the best beds have comfortable and supportive mattresses. Following this observation, Sealy came up with the best possible combination of different dimensions, materials and structural design to give you optimum comfort while sleeping.
Their research also found that a comfortable mattress is one that interacts cooperatively with the human body - when the mattress conforms to your body shape. Again Sealy listened and responded, creating beds which hug your body and dip just the right amount, with just the proper proportion of bounce and conformation.
The next time you find yourself yearning for a good bed, take a look at your mattress and see if your body really likes it. If your answer turns out negative, go out and test a few. After all, you spend one-third of your life in bed; if that’s not reason enough to invest in a quality sleep system on it, there’s also plenty of evidence proving the importance of good sleep for your mind and body function. With all the ranges provided by Sealy, you’re sure to find one that suits your body.
Body signatures (which is your body’s shape reflected in the mattress), in modern beds are normal and are generally an indication that the comfort layers are working with your body as they should.
To determine if an impression is normal you would need to take a measurement. Place a long, straight edge, like a broom handle across the mattress surface. Measure from the underside of the straight edge to the top of the quilt design, not the stitching line. A measurement of 32mm or less would not indicate the presence of a manufacturing concern with your mattress.
Body signatures may appear to be more pronounced with King Size mattresses. Utilising the entire surface of your mattress and rotating it as recommended in your Sealy Guarantee/ Warranty will assist in providing even wear, particularly during the first one to three months of your mattress life. The base that your mattress is on may contribute to more pronounced body impressions forming.
Sealy does not recommend putting a new mattress on an old base and strongly recommends purchasing a Sealy ensemble (both mattress and base). If the base is a slat base, this could also influence the performance of your mattress. Sealy suggests that the slats be secured with a centre support rail and leg, with the gap between the slats smaller than the slats themselves.
To work out whether your base is the problem, one suggestion is to take the mattress off the base and try it on the floor. If the impressions are less evident, this may indicate that there is a problem with the base.
Your new Sealy mattress will consist of brand new foams, silks, wools and cottons and these new materials require time to conform to your body shape and weight. As such, there may be a 'settling' period of 6 to 8 weeks for a new mattress.
Noise may come from the mattress or the base. The best way to determine the source of the noise is to isolate the mattress from the base onto the floor and then attempt to replicate the noise.
BASE ISSUE: There are a number of possible causes of noise with bases, including castors/glides not being fitted correctly, headboard brackets, or the base rubbing against a nearby power point.
MATTRESS ISSUE: Mis-use of the mattress such as sitting, standing or jumping can generate noise. If the noise occurs whilst sleeping, we would suggest contacting our Customer Care Department to discuss the issue further.
Any odour you detect when your mattress is first delivered is generally a short term issue and should not last any longer than two weeks. If you continue to have concerns regarding the odour, we recommend you sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on the mattress, leave for as long as possible, then give a light vacuum off. Alternatively placing the bicarbonate of soda in a bowl in the bedroom or spraying the mattress with a fabric deodorizer may also assist. Always check the suitability of spray prior to use.
